Responding to a question in the House of Representatives, Akhannouch stressed that despite the rainfall that Morocco has experienced since the beginning of this month, the government is determined to redouble its efforts and boost investment to cope with the threat of water stress that the Kingdom has experienced in recent years and thus spare the country the worst scenarios in this area.
He has, in this sense, emphasized the great importance of water policy in Morocco given the vital role of this commodity in social and economic life and in the ecological balance of the country, noting that the Kingdom has always given special attention to the mobilization of water resources.
The Head of Government also highlighted the relevance and foresight of the vision of HM King Mohammed VI who has paid special attention to this issue and gave His High Directions to preserve and enhance water resources, in a way that contributes to ensuring the welfare of current and future generations, recalling in this context the content of the Royal speech on the occasion of the opening of the last legislative session, which constituted a renewed roadmap to mobilize efforts to overcome the problem of water scarcity in the Kingdom and meet the current and future challenges.
Akhannouch recalled that the Executive has endeavored, since the beginning of its mandate, to establish a clear methodological framework, giving special priority to the water policy in its governmental program, whether through the restructuring of the water governance system and strengthening the efficiency and convergence, or by ensuring an equitable territorial distribution of water resources, with what this implies in terms of implementation of programs to build dams, desalination of sea water, treatment of wastewater and stormwater and improving the profitability of irrigation channels and drinking water.
He assured, in this context, that the significant progress made since independence for the realization of a relevant water policy has enabled Morocco to meet “our economic needs and ensure our water and food security, thanks to the vision of the construction of dams of the late HM Hassan II.
In this context, the Head of Government said that the proactive approach adopted by the Kingdom has achieved positive results, especially in terms of spatial justice, noting that the experience of decentralized water management has contributed to the creation of the first Agency of the hydraulic basin in 1997, the establishment of an important infrastructure in this area and meet the growing needs of all water users.
