Responding to a question on “the upgrading of the national health system”, during the plenary session devoted to the government’s public policy in the House of Representatives, Akhannouch explained that this strategic institution will work to regulate the compulsory medical coverage and assess the effectiveness of services provided by the various stakeholders in the public and private sectors.

The same structure will be responsible for the development of training guides and best practices in the medical field and will ensure the proper use and distribution of care on users and health professionals, he added.

This body is likely to allow a real continuity of national policies in health and to perpetuate the plans and major projects, in addition to ensuring the convergence and complementarity between the health policy and the general guidelines for the generalization of medical coverage, said the government chief.

To improve the governance of drug policy in the Kingdom, Akhannouch stressed that the government tends, as part of the structural reform of the health system, towards the creation of the National Agency for Drugs and Health Products which will have financial and administrative autonomy.

This agency, he added, will have the task of overseeing the development process of the national pharmaceutical policy and contribute to its implementation, in addition to accompanying the transformations and challenges that arise in this area.

The consolidation of the Kingdom’s pharmaceutical sovereignty is likely to strengthen health security and ensure equitable access to medicines and care, said the head of government, adding that through support for domestic production and manufacture of generics, citizens will have access to affordable basic medicines.

In this sense, Akhannouch highlighted the strong support of the government to the project of the manufacturing plant of vaccines against Covid-19 and other vaccines, whose construction was launched by HM King Mohammed VI, a large-scale project that will “strengthen the sovereignty of the Kingdom vaccine and make available quantities of vaccines to Africa”.

In addition, he said that the government is working on the establishment of the Moroccan Blood Agency as soon as possible, the aim being to achieve self-sufficiency in blood products needed to save lives, given the difficulties encountered by blood centers in Morocco and the vital importance of this issue for the health of citizens, at a time when the strategic stock of blood covers only a few days.

This agency, said the head of government, will be responsible for the development and implementation of a national strategy for the provision of blood and blood products, the issuance of permits for the establishment of blood stocks in hospital units under the regional health groups and the development of diagnostic activities and treatment, as well as enforce the standards of vigilance in the collection of blood donors.
