Ouagadougou: Information and communication technologies (ICT) are at the service of the human person. They must not infringe upon human identity, private life, individual and collective freedoms, or human rights in general. In order to prevent risks, the Burkinabe legislator adopted law No. 001-2021/AN of March 30, 2021 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data. This law replaces that of 2004 which revealed inadequacies.

The Commission for Information Technology and Liberties (CIL), established by law, ensures that the processing of personal data carried out by public and private structures complies with the provisions of the aforementioned law.

This year, the CIL is celebrating the 2nd edition of the national day for the protection of personal data under the theme: ‘ Protection of personal data in a context of security crisis: issues and perspectives ‘.

The choice of this theme is justified by the context of insecurity that our country is going through, marked by the
increase in the means of collecting and processing data on individuals.

The celebration of this day is an opportunity for the CIL to lead discussions to identify suitable solutions to better protect personal data.

Also, several activities will be carried out, including panels, awareness sessions and radio broadcasts.

In addition, a hackathon will put developers in competition to design and create digital solutions for the promotion and protection of personal data.

It should be remembered that the establishment of a national day for the protection of personal data is the result of advocacy which resulted in 2023. The choice of March 30 for the celebration corresponds to the anniversary date of the adoption of the 2021 law.

I hope that this 2nd edition will further mark significant progress towards our constant quest to establish a culture of protection of personal data and privacy in both public and private administrations and within populations.

I invite all the structures concerned as well as the diffe
rent socio-professional layers and each individual concerned to appropriate the message of the CIL and to adopt good practices so that the use of ICT is more secure and respectful of private life. people.
