Ouagadougou: The Ministry in charge of Solidarity held a training session for 30 actors from research institutes on the collection of inclusive data including the Washington Group questionnaire, with the aim of improving the living conditions of people with disabilities.

‘Speaking of data availability, note that in Burkina Faso, according to the WHO, there are an estimated 13 to 15% disabled people. This estimate is 1.1% according to the 2019 EDS. A disparity in data which could be linked to the methodology used on both sides does not help the actors involved in planning interventions for people with disabilities,’ explained Ms. Anne-Marie Wédraogo, program manager of CBM Global.

Ms. Wédraogo maintained that this training session will make it possible to strengthen the capacities of statistical data providers on the collection of inclusive data, with the aim of taking inclusion into account in all research and studies.

Mr. Somé Sagnon, project manager at the Ministry in charge of Solidarity, representing M
inister Nandy Somé/Diallo, affirmed that a questionnaire called ‘Washington Group’ was integrated into the data collection tools administered in Burkina Faso during the RGPH of 2019 and has become the international benchmark for capturing data on disability.

‘It makes it possible to identify the majority of people within the general population who experience a restriction in participating in public life or in carrying out actions related to their lifestyle and related functions,’ he suggested
