Burkina receives support of 14 million FCFA from the FAO to fight against avian flu

Ouagadougou: The United Nations Agriculture and Food Fund (FAO) provided support of 14 million FCFA intended to strengthen the capacities of the National Livestock Laboratory in the Burkinabe government’s response to the avian flu epidemic, which appeared on March 1 in Ouagadougou.

The FAO donation, distributed in 19 packages, essentially includes laboratory equipment for diagnosis and protective equipment according to details provided by the communication services of the Burkinabe Ministry of Livestock.

The representative of the Ministry in charge of Animal Resources, Dr Jean-Marie Batiebo reassured that this material will be very useful for the diagnosis and implementation of response measures against this poultry disease.

‘We hope that these acquisitions will be useful and beneficial to you, in order to enable the country to respond effectively to the current crisis and help it quickly regain its status as a free country, in order to enable the poultry sector to contribute effectively to the agricultura
l offensive,’ indicated Ibrahim Ouédraogo, one of the FAO representatives,

Epidemic episodes of avian flu have been reported in 2021 and 2022 in Burkina Faso. For this year 2024, cases were recorded in early March in Ouagadougou and a month earlier in Niamey, in neighboring Niger.
