Training Program on Counter-Terrorism Launched in Rabat

This first session of a 10-week training, supervised by international experts, aims to strengthen the specialized and technical capabilities of participants in the field of investigations and counter-terrorism. Thus, 24 participants representing law enforcement institutions from six African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal) will take part in the first “basic level” training module for three weeks (May 23 to June 10, 2022).

The training modules will be delivered over the course of a year, according to the following schedule: basic module (May 23-June 10), intermediate module (September 5-23), advanced level (November 21-December 9) and trainer level (February 2023).

Speaking by video conference, the Deputy Director of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Mauro Miedico, said that this Office, the first of its kind in Africa, aims to stand out as a training, qualification and capacity building hub in the fight against terrorism, and this through training sessions supervised by regional and international experts.

The organization of this kind of training in Rabat reflects the concrete commitment of Morocco to the fight against terrorism and the contribution to the maintenance of international peace and security, he said.

For his part, the head of the UNOCT Office in Africa, Carlos Monteiro Reis, welcomed the development of this innovative program, stressing that several countries will benefit from this training program to strengthen their skills in the fight against terrorism.

The UN official noted the importance of accompanying the participants in this training to apply the skills acquired in the service of programs and policies to combat terrorism in their countries, noting that this training program for African experts in the fight against terrorism will develop a platform for communication and exchange of experiences after training.

For his part, the Director of Global Issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Ismail Chekkori, stressed that this training is a new step in the fight against terrorism and the establishment of peace in Africa, emphasizing the terrorist threats that threaten the stability and security of the continent and the importance of combining efforts to address them.
