European Parliament: Morocco-EU Parliamentary Committee Holds Series of Meetings in Strasbourg and Brussels

During these meetings, the two parties expressed the common will to continue the Euro-Moroccan dialogue and stressed the importance of reaching consensual solutions to the challenges and threats faced and give new impetus to Morocco-EU relations, said a statement by the joint parliamentary committee on the Moroccan side.

It is also a question to act together to promote the European Neighborhood Policy by seizing all opportunities for cooperation offered to achieve sustainable security and common prosperity, added the same source.

During these meetings, added the statement, Haddad pleaded to strengthen and support the process of Euro-Moroccan partnership through an approach aimed at establishing stronger ties likely to promote joint development, particularly in the areas of energy, peace, security, agriculture, fisheries, migration, development of the Sahel region, the fight against organized crime and cross-border terrorism.

He also affirmed the need to address the Moroccan-European partnership in all its dimensions and to be aware of the seriousness of the situation and the growing security threats, stressing the need to combine efforts in the framework of a participatory and preventive approach to address all the risks that threaten the Euro-Mediterranean region.

In this context, European officials praised the role of the Moroccan-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee and its efforts to bridge perspectives and exchange experiences, with the aim of strengthening the partnership and raising the level of performance of parliamentary diplomacy.

The members of the parliamentary committee took this opportunity to confront the maneuvers aimed at undermining the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and affect the distinguished partnership between Morocco and the EU, based on mutual respect, international charters and agreements concluded in the framework of the advanced status characterizing the Morocco-European partnership.

In this regard, European parliamentarians were made aware of the approach of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Committee on International Trade, concerning the holding of a joint hearing under the chairmanship of the Subcommittee on Human Rights on the “Occupied and Non-Self-Governing Territories” with a view to sowing confusion between the Occupied Palestinian Territories with the question of the Moroccan Sahara.

After informing several European parliamentarians members of these two committees, stressed the statement, a meeting was held with the chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Maria Arena, and the rapporteur of the Committee on International Trade, Kathleen Van Brempt, to inform them of the protest and rejection of the Moroccan-EU joint parliamentary committee of this unjustifiable, unfair and biased act, which was also rejected by the external services and the Directorate for Trade of the European Union which refused to participate.

It added that during this “biased and misleading” session, several European parliamentarians expressed their regret and indignation at the organization of such meetings, which are likely to mislead and flout the principle of objectivity and impartiality promoted by the European Union and the international community. They also condemned this irresponsible behavior, which contradicts the position of the European Union on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

As for the measures taken by the Moroccan-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee with the European Parliament concerning the removal of the flag of the Chimeric Republic from the website of the European Parliament, the committee was officially informed of the restructuring of the European website, the immediate removal of this fictitious flag opting only for the sign of the African Parliament.

Regarding the acceleration of the action of the joint parliamentary committee with the European side, the chairman of the committee Haddad and his European counterpart, Andrea Cozzolino, have agreed to activate the work of bilateral subcommittees from March 21, and the preparation of recommendations to the biannual meeting and the annual meeting scheduled for May 12 at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The Moroccan parliamentary delegation, which includes twelve parliamentarians from both Houses of Parliament, held talks with 34 European MPs belonging to different political currents.
