Siliana: 330 hectares of various tree species planted in Kesra forest

Tunis: The vegetation and forest cover in the locality of Kesra, Siliana governorate, known for its carob trees, is the subject of several reforestation campaigns.

The latest campaign targeted 330 hectares of forest in the Aliliga locality, which was the scene of a fire in 2018 that destroyed more than 600 hectares of Aleppo pine forest.

As part of the reforestation campaign, public works companies planted 200 hectares of carob trees in the forest. In addition, 130 hectares of various forest tree species were planted under agreements with Tunisian civil society associations (Soli and Green and others), including argan, eucalyptus and Berber cedar, also known as Atlas cypress, a species endemic to North Africa, as well as Makthar cypress, also an endemic species.

“Despite the climatic conditions, the results are generally satisfactory and the success rate of the plantations is encouraging. The trees planted are in good health,” says Abdelhamid Smeti of the Siliana Forestry Department.

According to Smeti, t
he novelty of this reforestation campaign is the introduction of jujube cultivation, a species whose value is still little appreciated by botanical science and little known to the general public in Tunisia.

These fruit species are exceptional examples of multipurpose perennial plants with great potential in the agricultural systems of the country’s arid, semi-arid and even desert zones,” according to the book “Les jujubiers en Tunisie”: Des rhamnacées aux valeurs ignorées” by Abdelwahed Laamouri, a Tunisian doctor of agronomy.

The reforestation campaign in the Kesra forest is being organised as part of the 141st anniversary of the creation of the Directorate-General of Forests (DGF).

President of the Republic meets with Minister of Social Affairs, discusses increase in SMIG and pensions and sub-contracting

Tunis: President Kais Saied met Thursday at Carthage Palace with Social Affairs Minister Kamel Madouri to discuss the increase in guaranteed minimum wages and pensions and subcontracting in the public and private sectors.

The meeting dealt with “a number of issues, including a 7% increase in the guaranteed minimum wage in the private sector for active workers starting in July 2024, retroactive to May 1, 2024, and a second increase of 7.5% starting January 1, 2025. This will automatically lead to an increase in pensions in the private sector, also retroactive to May 1, 2024 and January 1, 2025, which will include about one million pensioners, according to a presidency statement.

The meeting also addressed the issue of sub-contracting in the public and private sectors and fixed-term contracts.

President Kais Saied stressed that these issues can only be resolved in a radical way that breaks with the past and also cuts off the path of those who want to take advantage of this period by using workers in place of
others so that the new rules do not apply to them.

“The will is firm and must be embodied in new legislation aimed at eliminating all forms of precarious work and trafficking in human beings,” the head of state was quoted as saying in the presidency’s statement. “This is in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, which aims to guarantee the fundamental rights of workers and to ensure the right of every citizen to work in decent conditions and with a fair wage.”

Abir Moussi could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison (Karim Krifa)

Tunis: President of the Free Destourian Party (PDL), Abir Moussi, could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, said Karim Krifa, a member of Moussi’s defence committee, adding that the court had described the complaint filed against her by the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) as a “crime”.

Speaking at a press conference in Tunis on Friday, Krifa recalled that the investigating judge had accused Abir Moussi of processing personal data, obstructing the right to work and assault with the aim of causing chaos, while “she was only expressing her opinion on a series of decisions issued by the ISIE during a press conference as an opposition political party.

“There was no investigation or confrontation with the legal representative of the body,” he said.

Krifa reiterated that the Defence Committee will publish the results of the investigation “in order to reveal the offences committed in this case and to emphasise a second time that no crime has been committed”. The aim was to exclude Moussi from
the presidential elections,” he stressed.

Krifa pointed out that the Defence Committee has not yet had access to the file on the violations committed during the electoral silence in the 2019 presidential elections, in which the Court of Auditos relied on an ISIE report in 2019.

“The decision of the investigating judge was appealed to the indictment chamber, which has not yet issued its verdict. Despite this, the court issued two judgments, one at first instance and the other on appeal,” the lawyer said.

According to Krifa, the rush to issue the verdicts is aimed at imposing additional sanctions on Moussi, who was fined 7,000 dinars and asked to sign this verdict so that she could not benefit from her criminal record.

“Moussi has the right to stand as a candidate as long as her name is not removed from the electoral register,” he stressed.

Mohamed Boughaleb case: SNJT denounces banning journalists from covering hearing

Tunis: Journalists were banned from covering the hearing in the case of journalist Mohamed Boughaleb at the Tunis Court of Appeal on Friday, said the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT).

Journalists were denied access to the courtroom by the security guards on the instructions of the court’s president, reads a SNJT press release published Friday.

This ban “is another attack on press freedom and reflects the desire to bring journalists to trial behind closed doors,” SNJT added.

To this end, the SNJT called on the judicial authorities to review their decision to prevent journalists from entering the courtroom in cases that arouse public interest.

Article 117 of the Code of Civil and Commercial Procedure stipulates that hearings are public, unless the court decides to hold them behind closed doors, either on its own initiative or at the request of the Public Prosecutor or one of the parties, in order to safeguard public order, morality or the inviolability of family secrets.

The SNJT also reiterat
ed its refusal to use Decree-Law no.54 “to criminalise the press,” calling on the Tunisian judiciary to refer solely to Decree no.115 when prosecuting journalists.

Boughelab was sentenced to six months in prison at first instance in a case brought against him by an official at the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
