Hajj : Pilgrims Flock to Mina for Tarwiya Day

In the early hours of Friday (8 Dou Al Hijja 1445 H), the first day of the Hajj (Tarwiya), pilgrims began flocking to Mina, where they will spend the night before heading to Mount Arafa at dawn to perform the most important rite of pilgrimage.

Pilgrims from all over the world embarked to the Mina valley, 5 km east of Makkah, in an air of fervor, contemplation, devotion and prayer, before starting their ascent of Mount Arafa in the early hours of the following day.

The site of Mina, a desert on the road from Makkah to Mount Arafa, holds a particular importance amongst pilgrimage rites, as at its western entrance (the Jamarat Bridge) that the ritual of stoning the steles of Satan takes place. It is also the place where the Prophet Ibrahim prepared to carry out the sacrifice of his son Ismaïl, a gesture perpetuated by the Prophet Muhammed.

Saudi Arabia has made extensive arrangements to accommodate the pilgrims, including the preparation of four multi-specialty hospitals and services to ward off heat stress
and sunstroke.

Multi-storey residential towers have also been built in Mina to accommodate over 30,000 pilgrims, with modern designs inspired by the urban identity of the Holy Sites.

In addition, the ‘Holy Sites Train’, which serves 9 stations in various Holy Sites and connected by an 18-kilometer-long double track, is ready for use by pilgrims.

With a capacity of 72,000 passengers per hour in each direction, the train makes over 2,000 trips to facilitate pilgrims’ movements between the various locations.

The train reaches a speed of 80 km/h and spans the distance between Mina and Arafa in twenty minutes. The Holy Sites rail fleet consists of 17 trains, each with a capacity of 3,000 passengers, i.e. over 350,000 pilgrims for each complete trip

Tunis: Recent crises have deepened the economic imbalances associated with demographic transformations, technological developments, climate change, geopolitical tensions and increased forced migration, Minister of Social Affairs Kamel Maddouri underlined during his participation on June 13 in Geneva, in the Thematic Dialogue on Improving Coherence between Economic and Social Policies as part of the Inaugural Forum of the Global Coalition for Social Justice.

He further underscored the need to adapt to change and meet people’s needs, welcoming the call by the World Trade Organisation Director-General to redefine globalisation.

Maddouri recalled that Tunisia had been a pioneer in incorporating the concepts of social justice, decent work, fair pay, social protection, the guarantee of fundamental rights and trade union rights into its constitution, in addition to its accession to the global coalition for social justice.

Decent work, he said, is a necessary but insufficient condition for achieving social justice
, recalling the measures taken to reinforce the values of social justice, such as extending social security cover, protecting the social rights of migrants, eliminating all forms of precarious employment, guaranteeing a fair wage, revising the system of social security cover and the Labour Code, and combating all forms of exclusion and marginalisation.

The minister also underlined the need to support integrated programmes and policies aimed at creating decent and sustainable jobs, broadening social protection and facilitating fair and inclusive economic transitions.

Maddouri further pinpointed the need to achieve coherence and complementarity between economic and social policies.

The participants in the forum indicated that societies work towards social justice in various ways, notably by protecting the most vulnerable and marginalised groups, reducing poverty and guaranteeing equal opportunities.

They affirmed that the global coalition for social justice will help build cohesion in the multilateral syste
m and enhance the social dimension of sustainable development, by ensuring that social justice is prioritised in policy-making and in the implementation of activities at national, regional and global levels.

The Global Coalition for Social Justice aims to mobilise further political commitment and investment, and to encourage concrete action for social justice and decent work, in support of national priorities.

The Coalition will foster multilateral cooperation and partnerships and play a key role in advocating and mobilising for the recognition of social justice on the multilateral agenda, in particular at the proposed United Nations World Social Summit in 2025.

The Sahel region wants to have a futuristic museum

The Sahel region wants to equip itself with a futuristic museum worthy of its richness and cultural diversity, which will be a real space for the transmission of cultural values, intellectual and interreligious dialogue, of learning and training for life, the AIB learned.

The governorate of the Sahel region organized in Dori, on Tuesday June 11, 2024, a day of consultation of the driving forces with a view to determining in a consensual manner the format and the location of the future regional museum to be created. This consultation framework responds to an instruction from the Minister of State, Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.

According to Wulfran Bamas, high commissioner of the Séno province, representing the governor of the Sahel, Burkina Faso is a country with old traditions, which, after its accession to independence, undertook several actions aimed at safeguarding and promoting its cultural heritage. .

Listening to Mr. Bamas, the country is cur
rently experiencing the most difficult times in its history, namely insecurity due to terrorism, the unfortunate consequences of which are numerous in all areas of life.

And the High Commissioner added that the cultural sector pays the heaviest price in the Sahel region, hence the need to preserve the objects of art, musical instruments and statuettes still preserved within the communities.

This is why, according to him, it is imperative to provide the Sahel region with a museum commensurate with its richness and cultural diversity, which will be a real space for the transmission of cultural values, intellectual and interreligious dialogue, learning and training for life.

In order to be able to give their opinions on the creation of such an infrastructure, participants were entitled to two communications on cultural heritage as a lever for social well-being and the mapping of museums in Burkina Faso.

At the end of these communications, the participants proposed the town of Dori, capital of the Séno provin
ce and the Sahel region, as the site for the future museum complex, for the objective reasons of its security, its accessibility and its strong urbanization.

They wanted it to be a general museum whose collection theme relates to all the communities in the region, an accessible and inclusive institution, attractive and with multiple offerings.
