Zoom bolsters security offering with the inclusion of post-quantum end-to-end encryption in Zoom Workplace

Post-quantum E2EE now available for Zoom Meetings, making Zoom the first UCaaS provider to offer the new security feature

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 21, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today, Zoom Video Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZM) announced that post-quantum end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is now globally available for Zoom Workplace, specifically Zoom Meetings, with Zoom Phone and Zoom Rooms coming soon. The launch of the new security enhancement makes Zoom the first UCaaS company to offer a post-quantum E2EE solution for video conferencing.

As adversarial threats become more sophisticated, so does the need to safeguard user data. In certain circumstances, attackers may have the ability to capture encrypted network traffic now, with the intent to decrypt it later when quantum computers become more advanced — a scenario often referred to as “harvest now, decrypt later”. So, while powerful quantum computers with this capability are not yet generally available, Zoom has taken a proactive stance by upgrading the algorithms designed to be able to withstand these potential future threats.

“Since we launched end-to-end encryption for Zoom Meetings in 2020 and Zoom Phone in 2022, we have seen customers increasingly use the feature, which demonstrates how important it is for us to offer our customers a secure platform that meets their unique needs,” said Michael Adams, chief information security officer at Zoom. “With the launch of post-quantum E2EE, we are doubling down on security and providing leading-edge features for users to help protect their data. At Zoom, we continuously adapt as the security threat landscape evolves, with the goal of keeping our users protected.”

How post-quantum E2E encryption works
When users enable E2EE for their meetings, Zoom’s system is designed to provide only the participants with access to the encryption keys that are used to encrypt the meeting; this is the behavior for both post-quantum E2EE and standard E2EE. Because Zoom’s servers do not have the necessary decryption key, encrypted data relayed through Zoom’s servers is indecipherable. In addition, to defend against “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, Zoom’s post-quantum E2E encryption uses Kyber 768, an algorithm being standardized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as the Module Lattice-based Key Encapsulation Mechanism, or ML-KEM, in FIPS 203.

President Kais Saied discusses social issues with Minister of Social Affairs

Tunis: President Kais Saied reviewed a number of issues related to social affairs in general during a meeting with Social Affairs Minister Malik Zahi at Carthage Palace on Tuesday.

“Today, we are moving steadily to develop a new legislative system to break with the legal legacy that Tunisia inherited, which has become obsolete, as well as corruption, injustice and exclusion,” Saied was quoted as saying in a presidency statement.

He added that the stage the country is going through requires ‘different perceptions, new ideas and concepts in line with a new political ideology.’

The President of the Republic also stressed the need to consolidate the efforts of all state bodies so that Tunisian citizens can lead a dignified life, no less than their right to employment, health, transport and education, which are all basic human rights.

“State policy should not be based on patchwork and sectoral approaches, but rather on a vision of a total liberation project for the citizen and the country”.

The President of t
he Republic also spoke of the need to rethink the support given to social funds, finding different ways of enabling them not only to achieve their financial equilibrium, but also to fulfil the legitimate objectives for which they were created.

The Head of State also stressed the need to speed up the development of new laws that he had ordered to be reviewed, such as those relating to subcontracting and temporary contracts, which do not achieve the social stability that every worker seeks.

“The term ‘precarious work’ should be abolished,” he stressed.

The President of the Republic highlighted the need to speed up the resolution of the situation of construction workers and contractors who have spent decades of their lives working and are now barely noticed. This is a ‘blatant injustice that cannot continue,’ he said, adding that those who have been retired must be treated in a way that preserves their honour and dignity.

In this regard, the Head of State pointed out that the increase in retirement pensions
must be an automatic process, just as when wages are increased, there must be an automatic adjustment.

He added that just as workers have the right to fair wages, pensioners have the right to fair pensions.

The President of the Republic concluded by saying that the rhetoric of crisis that was being used was intended to justify not developing the legislation that the Tunisian people wanted. “It was a tool of governance and today it has become a tool for questioning state policy,” he added.

First national forum on vocational training inaugurated

Tunis: The first national forum on vocational training was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Tunis City of Culture in the presence of several ministers and representatives of national bodies and centres working in the field of vocational training.

Organised on the initiative of the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training within the framework of Tunisian-Swiss cooperation, the forum will last for two days.

Speaking at the event, Lotfi Dhiab, Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, said that the forum is part of the ministry’s strategy to promote and improve vocational training in order to boost the national economy and Tunisian businesses.

He added that the forum includes a number of topics aimed at raising awareness of training and networking opportunities between banks and those seeking financing for the creation of projects, particularly in the fields of information technology, application development and intelligent industries.

In this context, the Minister stressed the importance of vocatio
nal training in the fields offered and the employment prospects for young people in Tunisia and abroad, as well as strengthening cooperation and partnership between various economic sectors and private and public structures in order to promote employability and support graduates of vocational training.

For her part, the Minister for the Family, Women, Children and the Elderly, Amel Belhaj Moussa, stressed that vocational training is a strategic choice as an essential pillar for the economic empowerment of families, women and young girls, especially since 70% of the beneficiaries of the “Raidat” programme have undergone vocational training in order to benefit from loans to launch their own projects.

She added that 57% of the beneficiaries of the Raidat programme are university graduates, pointing out that several diplomas do not correspond to the requirements of the labour market, hence the need to integrate the vocational training system in areas of high employability, in particular agriculture and crafts.

8
0% of craftsmen and 70% of workers in the agricultural sector are women, she also noted.

In this context, the Minister recalled the agreement signed between the Ministries of Women, Employment and Vocational Training to launch training programmes in various fields, in particular in the centres for young rural girls in the governorates of Kasserine and Jendouba, with a view to obtaining diplomas.

For his part, the Minister of Tourism, Mohamed Moez Belhassine, spoke of the importance of training in the tourism sector in the light of the current needs of the labour market, in particular the qualification of human capital, especially in the tourism and crafts sectors, given that the tourism sector directly and indirectly employs some 400,000 citizens and the crafts sector has almost 350,000 artisans.

He pointed out that human resources need to be constantly rehabilitated in order to strengthen their capacities in the various related specialisations, and highlighted the existence of the Training Agency for Tour
ism Professions in its various branches to ensure continuous training.

In the course of this year, around 1,700 employees and workers will receive basic training in eight centres, and another 2,000 will benefit from continuous training as part of the overall quality system and the training of workers in the tourism and crafts sectors,” he said.

This first forum will include interactive panels bringing together experts, government representatives, business leaders and young talents to discuss the strategic challenges facing vocational training in Tunisia.

Key issues to be addressed include the evolution of the labour market and the need for trades and skills in the context of the energy and environmental transition, public-private partnerships to increase the effectiveness of training programmes, the promotion of entrepreneurship and digitalisation in vocational training.

Nobel laureate Moungi Bawendi gives lecture at International Diplomatic Academy

Tunis: Nobel laureate in chemistry, Moungi Bawendi gave a lecture on Tuesday evening at a packed conference hall of the International Diplomatic Academy in Tunis.

The lecture was attended by Minister Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar ambassadors, diplomats, academics, researchers and senior foreign ministry officials.

Bawendi’s visit to Tunisia, which follows his sharing of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with American Louis Brus and Russian Alexey Ekimov, was at the invitation of the University of Tunis and the Association of Graduates of the National Engineering School.

The trio of scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery of colloidal quantum dots: nanoparticles of semiconductor material.

Bawendi told TAP his purpose in visiting Tunisia was to explain his scientific research and academic life, stressing that his Nobel Prize for the discovery and analysis of quantum dots underscores the profound importance of scientific research in human life.

For him, res
earchers, students or pupils do not need to be naturally brilliant to succeed; what they need is curiosity, a thirst for knowledge, resilience and a passion for learning and discovery.

Drawing on his experience, Bawendi urged students and researchers to engage in innovative and evolving research topics, rather than focusing solely on classical subjects.

He emphasised the need to believe in their abilities and not to despair during their research or experiments, but to persevere in their efforts to achieve results.

During his lecture at the International Diplomatic Academy in Tunis, Bawendi delved into his diverse research endeavours, highlighting that in 1993 he led a revolution in the chemical production of quantum dots, resulting in near-perfect molecules, a high quality imperative for their applications.

Bawendi claims that these infinitesimally small nanoparticles of nanotechnology radiate from television screens to LED lights, can even guide surgeons as they remove tumour tissue, and encompass a wide
range of applications and burgeoning uses in medicine and technology.

Thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of these pioneering scientists, quantum dots now illuminate computer monitors and television screens based on QLED technology. They also add nuance to the light of some LED lamps, and biochemists and doctors use them to map biological tissue.

“Thirty years ago, all we had was curiosity, and today we are reaping the rewards of that curiosity,” said Bawendi.

President Saied decorates Nobel Laureate Moungi Bawendi with Grand Cordon of Order of the Republic

Tunis: President Kais Saied, on Tuesday morning, decorated the 2023 Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry, Moungi Bawendi, with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Republic.

The ceremony was an opportunity for the President of the Republic to emphasise the Tunisian state’s commitment to education, scientific research and the creation of appropriate conditions for Tunisians to rise to the highest scientific ranks, according to a Presidency statement.

He stressed that Tunisia is rich in experts, a source of national pride, and that many countries turn to Tunisia because they believe in its outstanding international scientific level in all fields, including those that are precise and modern.

In October 2023, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to three US-based researchers working in the field of nanotechnology. Among them was Tunisian Moungi Bawendi, born in Paris in 1961, who also holds French and American citizenship.

Bawendi is currently visiting Tunisia to give a seri
es of lectures at the Diplomatic Academy, the City of Sciences and the National School of Engineers.
