WB willing to support Tunisia in implementing its socio-economic programmes


Tunis: Regional Director for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions (EFI) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at the World Bank (WB) Nadir Abdellatif Mohammed voiced satisfaction at the level of relations between his institution and Tunisia.

During a meeting held on Monday with Finance Minister Sihem Boughdiri Nemsia, the official pointed out the Bank’s willingness to support Tunisia and help it implement its socio-economic programmes, and to contribute to the provision of the necessary technical resources.

Nemsia voiced for her part, satisfaction at the cooperation between the two sides, reiterating willingness to further scale it up and diversify it, notably over the next period.

The minister also underlined the importance of WB-financed programmes and projects aimed at improving the business climate, combating financial exclusion and facilitating SME access to funding sources in order to boost investment and resume the normal pace of economic activity, according to a Finance Department
press release issued on Monday.

Nemsia further underlined the State’s determination to press ahead with reforms based on national guidelines and priorities, with a view to achieving financial stability, gradually bringing financial balances under control, and preserving and consolidating social achievements by enhancing the State’s social role and ensuring peace and social equity.

Computerised system under installation at Tunis-Carthage airport to reduce storage time for goods


Tunis: A computerised system for managing the flow of imported goods, which will reduce storage time from 14 to three days, is under installation at Tunis-Carthage International Airport, Equipment and Housing Minister in charge of the Transport Department management Sarah Zaafarani Zenzri said.

Speaking at a workshop held on Monday on the outcome of the survey on ‘Tunisia’s logistics vision for 2040: positioning Tunisia as a logistics hub in the Mediterranean,’ Zenzri pointed out that the procedures for establishing a land reserve for the creation of a national network of logistics zones involved 14 sites covering an area of around 3,100 hectares.

Typographical work and economic studies have already begun in six logistics zones, namely Bir Mchergua, Rades, Zarzis, Bouchama, Gargour and Enfidha, she recalled, accordint to a Ministry of Transport press release on Tuesday.

These zones, which cover a total area of 600 hectares, were the subject of two calls for tenders launched on January 16, 2021, for the con
struction and operation of two logistics zones in Bouchama (Gabes) and Gargour (Sfax).

As part of its logistics vision, Tunisia is endeavouring to make its logistics system more efficient and to develop multimodal transport in order to boost the competitiveness of the national economy and support its role in integrating the national economy into global value chains.

WB reaffirms commitment to further foster cooperation relations with Tunisia


Tunis: Regional Director for Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions (EFI) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region at the World Bank (WB) Nadir Abdellatif Mohammed reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to further foster cooperation relations with Tunisia.

He reaffirmed during a meeting on May 13 in Tunis, with Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) Governor Fethi Zouhair Nouri, that his institution is willing to keep on supporting the reform and development process undertaken by Tunisia to achieve an inclusive and sustainable growth, according to a press release issued by the Issuing Bank.

Nouri voiced satisfaction at the level of cooperation with the WB, pointing out that the BCT has embarked on an ambitious reform process based on close collaboration with various partners, including the WB Group.

He commended in this regard, the efforts exerted by this institution, both financially and technically, to support a large number of major strategic projects within the BCT.

These projects notably focus on build
ing the resilience of the banking sector and boosting digital finance and financial inclusion.

The Governor of the BCT further pointed out the importance of ongoing projects to combat climate change and to green the financial sector.

Foreign trade: deficit narrows in first fourth months of 2024 [Upd 2]


Tunis: The trade deficit shrank 23.5% to TND 4,77.2 million in the first four months of 2024 from TND 6,238.2 million during the same period in 2023, the National Institute of Statistics (French: INS) said in its Foreign Trade at Current Prices (April 2024) note released on Tuesday.

The coverage rate rose 5.2 percentage points on the same period last year to 81.7%.

This is the result of deficit with some countries, such as China (TND -2,538.1 million), Russia ( TND -2,197 million), Algeria (TND -1,408.1 million), Turkey (TND -951.6 million), Greece (TND -578 million) and Ukraine (TND -544.4 million).

Meanwhile, the balance of trade in goods posted surplus, mainly with France (TND 1,940.2 million, Italy (TND 1,097.8 million, Germany (TND 761 million), Libya (TND 547.9 million) and Morocco (TND 111.7 million).

The trade balance deficit excluding energy fell to TND -745.6 million, while the energy balance deficit amounted to TND -4,026.3 million against TND – 3,699.3 million during the first four months of 2
023.

Exports grew 4.8% in the first four months of 2024 against 7% during the same period in 2023, totalling TND 21, 245.2 million against TND 20, 266.4 million last year.

INS figures show the upward trend observed in exports mainly involves the food industry with sales jumping 56.4% driven by higher olive oil exports (TND 2.450,2 million against TND 1,167.7 million). This also includes the exports of energy (+17.8%) and mechanical and electrical engineering industries (3%).

Exports of the sector of mining, phosphate and derivatives and the sector of textile, clothing and leather dipped -26.3% and -11%, respectively.

Tunisian exports to the European Union (70.9% of total exportats) edged up 2.9%, driven by higher sales to Italy (+12.3%), Spain (+47.6%) and Belgium (+4,5%). A downward trend was reported for France (-0.8%) and Germany (-2.6%).

Tunisia saw its exports grow to Algeria (+48.3%) and Egypt (+22.9%), while falling with Libya (-28.1%) and Morocco (-21.4%).

Imports dropped (-1.8%) after posting a 3.7% rise during the same period in 2023.

The value of imports amounted to TND 26,017.1 million against TND 26,504.6 million during the first four months of 2023.

This 1.8% drop is the results of lower imports of raw materials and semi-finished products (-9%) which account for 33% of total imports; and higher purchases of energy products (+10.8%) coupled with stable imports of capital goods (+0.2%) and consumer goods (+0.04%).

Imports from the European (53.9% of overall imports) fell 0.7% to TND 11,452.5 million. This includes Italy (-15%), France (-2.6%) and Belgium (-20.9%).

Meanwhile, purchases from Germany trended upwards (+13.3%) with Spain following suit (+1.5%). A rise was similarly reported with Russia (+25.5%), Ukraine (+4.7%) and India (+20.2%). They dropped with China (-2.9%), the USA (- 16.2%) and Turkey (-4.9%).

Tunis: Tunindex closed Tuesday’s session up 0.3% to 9,136.4 points with a low a volume of TND 2.7 million, according to broker Tunisie Valeurs.

OfficePlast shares were the best performers. Without being traded, the share’s price rose by 4.3% to TND 0.970.

BH Leasing shares also performed well after edging up 4% to TND 3.370, generating a capital of TND 16,000.

BIAT shares were the most traded. The stock rose by 0.3% to TND 90.490, feeding the market with a capital of TND 406,000 (i.e. 15% of the session’s traded volume).

Essoukna shares fell by 4.4% to TND 1.300 without drawing flows.

SOMOCER shares also dropped by 4.1% to TND 0.470, trading for only TND 10,000.

Fifteen Tunisian enterprises seek to conquer Senegalese market


Tunis: Some fifteen Tunisian enterprises operating in various sectors, mainly agriculture, the agri-food industry, public works, building materials, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, stationery as well as services, are taking part in a business mission on May 13-15 in Dakar, Senegal.

The mission is organised by the Exports Promotion Centre (French: CEPEX), in collaboration with Tunisia’s embassy in Dakar. Tunisian business leaders will be able to explore new business opportunities and seal strategic partnerships with their Senegalese counterparts.

A business forum was held on Monday, with the participation of over 300 Senegalese economic operators, CEPEX said.

CEO of CEPEX Mourad Ben Hassine presented the Tunisian offer and trade figures.

Senegal is Tunisia’s first sub-Saharan African partner with an export volume of TND 267 million in 2023 (+42% on the previous year), that is 17% of the overall sub-Saharan Africa volume.

Joint ministerial working session focuses on supply chemical fertilisers for smooth agricultural season 2024-2025


Tunis: Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Fatma Chiboub, Minister of Trade and Export Development, Kalthuom Ben Rejeb, and Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Abdel Monêem BelSati, stressed at a joint ministerial working meeting the need to supply the necessary quantities of various types of fertiliser according to a predetermined timetable which takes account of the specific nature of each season.

The ministers present at the meeting, held on Monday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry, emphasised the importance of speeding up the implementation of the integrated computer application to digitise and control the distribution channels for these products, with the aim of monitoring the supply of this material and combating the phenomena of monopolies and price manipulation.

The aim is to safeguard farmers’ interests and support production systems, especially in light of the challenges imposed by climate change.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Industry, th
e participants stressed the need to overcome all the difficulties and shortcomings that are paralysing the implementation of these measures.

They also urged enhanced coordination and joint action to make the agricultural campaign a success in order to contribute to achieving food security in accordance with the policies established for this purpose.

The Ministry of Industry indicated that the work of the technical teams began Tuesday, with the implementation of the decisions taken at the joint ministerial meeting and the development of practical procedures according to the timetable in order to ensure the supply of chemical fertilisers for agricultural use and the organisation of their distribution channels.

The Ministry of Industry explained that this meeting, which was attended by the Managing Director of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT), Hedi Youssef, focused on the final preparations and procedures relating to the smooth running of the 2024-2025 agricultural campaign through the supply of chemical fer
tilisers for agricultural use and the organisation of their distribution channels.

Agriculture: Showroom dedicated to promotion of olive oil inaugurated in ONH


Tunis: A showroom dedicated to the promotion of Tunisian olive oil was inaugurated, Tuesday, at the National Olive Oil Office (ONH), by Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and fishing, Abdelmonem Belati.

This exhibition room, with an area of 30 m2, will present to Tunisians and tourists the varieties and brands of Tunisian olive oil that have won medals in international competitions.

Belati underlined the strategic importance of olive oil for the national economy, affirming that the showroom of Tunisian olive oil is part of a global approach promotion of this product.

He recalled that the production of olive oil reached 220,000 tonnes during the 2023/2024 season, affirming that 128,654 tonnes were exported with a value of 3,436 MD from November 1, 2023 to the end of April 2024.

Furthermore, 14,175 tonnes of packaged oil were exported with a value of 407 MD over the same period.

Olive oil export revenues thus recorded a positive development of 91% compared to the same period of the previous season. A
n improvement of 27% was also recorded in terms of quantities of packaged olive oil exported.

A marketing programme of 190,000 tonnes of olive oil by the end of October 2024, has been put in place by the government which gives absolute priority to this sector, the minister said, pointing out that Tunisia aims to achieve a production of one million tonnes of olive oil, through a better distribution of cultivated areas, the intensification of irrigated areas and the promotion of scientific research.

The inauguration of this showroom is part of the Tunisian agriculture week which celebrates National Agriculture Day (May 12) and the 60th anniversary of the agricultural evacuation.

Tunisia participates in 38th APAS Show in Brazil


Tunis: Tunisia is participating in the 38th edition of the APAS show which is being held from May 13 to 16 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a 46m² pavilion.

Tunisia’s participation is held by the Export Promotion Center (CEPEX) in close collaboration with the Tunisian embassy in Brasilia and the assistance of the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce.

Five Tunisian companies from the agri-food sector mainly offering dates, olive oil, artichokes, harissa and dried tomatoes are taking part in this show, said CEPEX, adding that Tunisia’s participation in this major event is part of diversifying its market strategy.

APAS Show represents a great opportunity for Tunisia to promote its offer as well as establish trade partnerships with professionals from the sector. The APAS show is attended by nearly 850 exhibitors and over 73,000 visitors from 200 countries and is considered a benchmark in Latin America.

Call for entries to UNESCO’s Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads International Photo Contest


Tunis: The 2024 edition of the Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads International Photo Contest is open for entries from 2 May to 14 July 2024.

Organised within the framework of the UNESCO Silk Roads Programme, and in line with the objectives of the UNESCO Youth Programme, by UNESCO’s Social and Human Sciences Sector, the 2024 edition of the Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads photo contest offers an exciting opportunity for young people from all over the world to capture their understanding of the shared heritage of the Silk Roads through the lens of their camera, according to the following link: https://unescosilkroadphotocontest.org/frdu

As the visual arts, and in particular photography, are so often used by today’s youth as a powerful tool for communication and self-expression, images have the potential to play a significant role in raising awareness of the key issues facing our contemporary world and help promote peace and understanding.

The photo contest provides an opportunity for young people to connect with one
another in a digital space and share their creativity and vision for the future.

The contest is divided into two age categories: 14-17 year olds, and 18-25 year olds. For the 6th edition of the contest this year participants are invited to submit their photographs that best encapsulate the shared heritage of the Silk Roads the theme of “Life Celebrations.”

The Selection Committee members will then examine these submissions and select the winners from each of the age categories. Examples of some of the very best photographs from the previous contests can be found here.

First place winners will receive a professional camera. Second place winners will receive a semi-professional camera, and the prize for third place will be a standard-model digital camera.

Around 60 of the best photos from the contest will appear in a professional photo album ‘Youth Lens on the Silk Roads’ and might be showcased in exhibitions held worldwide.

The Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads Photo Contest is an opportunity for young people
who live or have travelled within these regions to share their perceptions and further their understanding of the common cultural heritage and pluralistic identities emerging from the interactions and exchanges taking place along the Silk Roads.

The contest encourages the use of photography to extend these cultural interactions and encounters in the contemporary world, to foster mutual understanding and promote peace amongst the diverse populations encompassed by the Silk Roads.

The Silk Roads are an expansive region composed of a network of maritime and land routes. Originating in East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia the Silk Roads cross the Central Asian sub-continent, the Russian steppe, the Iranian and Anatolian plateaus, and the Arabian Peninsula.

They also stretch through North Africa and Northeast Africa, from Tanzania to Morocco. Additionally, they pass through Eastern and Southern Europe, before reaching France and the Iberian Peninsula.

‘Four Daughters’ receives seven nominations at 8th Critics Awards for Arab Films


Tunis: Kaouther Ben Hania’s Tunisian film ‘Four Daughters’ has been nominated in seven categories at the 8th edition of the ‘Critics Awards for Arab Films’ organised by the Arab Cinema Centre – ACC, on the fringes of the Cannes Film Festival. Other nominees include composer Amine Bouhafa, actor Majd Mastoura and actress Hend Sabry.

In a document received by TAP, the Arab Cinema Centre unveiled the final list of nominees for the 2024 Critics Awards for Arab Films, including feature films and shorts.

‘Goodbye Julia’ by Mohammed Kordofani (Sudan), ‘Inshallah a Boy’ by Amjad Al Rasheed (Jordan), Hajjan by Abu Bakr Shawky (Saudi Arabia) and ‘The Teacher’ by Farah Nabulsi (Palestine) are among the films shortlisted for the various awards.

The nominees have been selected from all Arab films produced and premiered outside the Arab world during the calendar year 2023 only.

They will be voted on by a jury of 209 critics from 72 countries around the world.

The list of winners will be announced on Saturday May 18 du
ring the ceremony organised in conjunction with the 77th Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25).

Four Daughters (107′, 2023) is a documentary feature film directed by Kaouther Ben Hania. It has been nominated for Best Director, Best Documentary, Best Actor (Majd Mastoura), Best Actress (Hend Sabry), Best Music (Amine Bouhafa), Best Cinematography (Farouk LaSridh) and Best Editing (Qutaiba Barhamji).

Ben Hania’s fifth feature, which is Tunisia’s entry for the 2024 Oscars, is a co-production between Tunisia (Cinetelefilms prod), France, Saudi Arabia and Germany. It had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27, 2023).

The music is by the renowned Tunisian composer Amine Bouhafa, also nominated for a Saudi Arabian feature film, HAJJAN.

Egypt-based actress Hend Sabry is nominated for Best Actress in Four Daughters and Kira and El Gin by Egyptian director Marwan Hamed.

The Arab Film Critics’ Awards are presented each year at a ceremony held during the Cannes Film Festival. The first edition too
k place on the sidelines of the 70th Cannes Film Festival.
