UN: Algeria, Nightmare of Palestinian Cause at Security Council

Not satisfied after having already blocked a statement from the Arab group condemning the Israeli violence against the Palestinians on the esplanade of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the new Algerian ambassador to the UN, Mohamed Ennadir Larbaoui, is doing it again by opposing this time the speeches of solidarity that the Arab Groups, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement were intending to make before the Security Council on Monday.

Thus, in yet another pathetic manifestation of the Algerian military regime’s disregard for the Palestinian issue, its permanent representative to the UN has blocked statements of support from these three groups for Palestine.

Using fallacious and baseless pretexts of requesting meetings of the Al-Quds Committee, the Algerian ambassador systematically and pitifully opposed any reference to the OIC Al-Quds Committee, and the prominent role unanimously appreciated by Chairman, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in the defense of the Palestinian cause and of the specific legal, historical, religious and demographic status of the Holy City.

Out of the 120 Member States of the Non-Aligned Movement, of the 56 Member States of the OIC and of the 22 Member States of the Arab League, only Algeria opposed the mention of the Al Quds Committee, using fallacious pretexts and villainous subterfuges to which the members of these groups have given no interest or the slightest credit.

In fact, not a single country has supported Algeria’s laughable positions, because being fully aware that the sterile gesticulations of the adrift Algerian regime on the Palestinian issue very badly hide its main objective, which is none other than to attack Morocco and its institutions.

On the contrary, the ambassadors of these three organizations have shown serious concern and a total rejection of the obstructionist attitude of the Algerian ambassador, which is hampering the action of three major groups within the United Nations and prevents support for the Palestinian cause.

It should be emphasized that the Algerian ambassador ignored the calls addressed to him by the ambassadors of Pakistan, president of the Islamic Group, and of Oman, president of the Arab Group, to show unity and to favor the interests of the Islamic Ummah and the Arab Nation, to the political calculations of Algeria.

The same call was made by the Permanent Representative of Morocco, Ambassador Omar Hilale, during a meeting of the Islamic group on Friday, calling on the Algerian ambassador to put aside his country’s hostility against Morocco, in order to maintain the unity, cohesion and harmony that have always prevailed within the Islamic, Arab and non-aligned groups, and emphasizing that it is essential, at this crucial moment, to speak with one voice in support of the Palestinian people, who need it more than ever.

Mr. Hilale recalled that in the past, the three groups have never had the slightest difficulty in expressing their unwavering support for Palestine and their appreciation to the Al-Quds Committee and its Chairman, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and this until the arrival of the new Algerian ambassador.

He called on the Algerian representative to demonstrate a spirit of responsibility, because his obstructions seriously and irremediably harms the Palestinian cause.

“Let’s unite our efforts to help our Palestinian brothers and sisters and our Palestinian cause,” said the Moroccan diplomat.

Responding to the ridiculous pretexts of the Algerian ambassador not to mention the Al Quds Committee, Mr. Hilale highlighted the concrete and tangible actions and achievements of the Committee and of its Chairman, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which have major political, economic and human impacts on the preservation of the status of the holy city and the improvement of the living conditions of Makdessis, through the multifaceted projects undertaken by Bayt mal Al Quds, financed at 86% by Morocco, on personal instructions of HM the King.

The Moroccan ambassador also dismantled and laid bare the alleged request for a meeting of the Al Quds Committee, rehashed and regurgitated by the Algerian delegation alone.

To this end, he reminded the Algerian diplomat that Algeria does not have the statutory right to call for a meeting of the Committee, adding that according to Committee’s rules of procedure, only the Chairman of this Committee or the majority of its 16 members can request such a meeting.

He added that the height of hypocrisy is that Algeria is not even a member of this Committee.

All calls from Morocco and from the presidents and members of the non-aligned, Islamic and Arab groups found no response from the Algerian ambassador.

In addition, several African countries, in particular Gabon, a member of the Security Council, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti and the Comoros, slammed the Algerian attitude which is seriously detrimental to the Palestinian cause.

They expressed their solidarity with Morocco and highlighted the historic role of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al Quds Committee, and of His actions and efforts in the defense of the Palestinian cause.

These efforts are highly appreciated by the African continent, they pointed out.

For their part, diplomats from Muslim countries have largely regretted that Algeria’s desperate and baseless maneuvers to attack the image of the Al-Quds Committee harm the Palestinian cause that it falsely claims to defend and serve all those who want to bury the Palestinian cause at the United Nations.

Same story and indignation among the Arab ambassadors who noted the dichotomy and the double language of Algeria, which claims to defend Palestine, and at the same time hinders international declarations of support for the Palestinian cause.

They wondered, not without anger, that if the Palestinian question was important for Algeria, why its Minister of Foreign Affairs Ramtane Laamamra did not deign to travel to Amman on April 21 to take part in the urgent meeting of the Arab Ministerial Committee for International Action against Illegal Israeli Policies and Measures in Occupied Al-Quds, and was represented by a simple diplomat.

They insisted that this meeting resulted in an extremely important statement in support of Palestine against the Israeli violations in Al-Quds, emphasizing the role of the Al-Quds Committee chaired by HM King Mohammed VI, and its executive arm Bayt mal Al Quds.

The general feeling among the delegations in New York is that Algeria is trying to hide its defeats and diplomatic setbacks on the Moroccan Sahara issue, by attacking the Kingdom on the Palestinian cause.

By doing so, they stressed, Algiers is selling its soul to the devil and seriously harming the Palestinian cause.

Obviously, the obsessive hatred against Morocco, which prevails at the level of the Algerian regime, is more important than the sacred cause of Palestine.

This is how Algeria has become the nightmare of the Palestinian cause in New York.

By standing alone against all, to silence the voice of international solidarity with the Palestinian people and to hold the Palestinian cause hostage, the Algerian regime silences international support within the United Nations for the Palestinian cause, and this for the first time in the history of the United Nations.

Algeria, the next president of the Arab Summit, is thus demonstrating to the international community that it pays no attention to Arab priorities, and particularly the Palestinian issue, leading several ambassadors and observers to wonder if it was not no time to move the next Arab summit to another country that has Arab causes at heart, particularly the Palestinian cause, and in no way their instrumentalization for selfish political calculations against its neighbor Morocco.
