This bilateral agreement stems from a common willingness to strengthen security cooperation between national security and intelligence on the one hand and on the other hand, collaboration with the Netherland’s Police; while valuing and strengthening constant exchanges between these institutions in a manner to effectively respond to the challenges posed by transnational organized crime and the threats associated with terrorism and violent extremism, a DGSN statement said.

The “letter of intent” constitutes an “agreement framework” to organize and support bilateral cooperation, in which all parties agree to areas of cooperation that focus on intelligence, criminal investigations and exchange of knowledge and expertise.

This letter, which remains unrestricted, defines the scope of cooperation in the following domains: counter-terrorism and extremism, drug trafficking, illicit firearms trafficking, financial and economic crimes (including money laundering), human trafficking and illegal migration, as well cybercrime, according to the same source.

To ensure efficient coordination of this bilateral security cooperation, a central focal point has been designated within the DGSN as well as within the Netherland’s Police. These points of contacts are entrusted with facilitating communication, and exchanging requests between all parties in an efficient, time-sensitive manner.

The signing of this joint “letter of intent” indicates the increasing importance of bilateral and multilateral international security cooperation, especially with regards to the growing transnational dimension of various forms of organized crime, as well as the increasing terrorist threats worldwide, the statement concluded.
