A medical and paramedical team from the Cardiovascular Diseases Unit at Rabta University Hospital recently achieved a number of medical and scientific feats at national and international levels, including a heart transplant on a child under the age of 10. This is the first of its kind in Africa and the Arab world since the first such operation took place in 1993. In partnership with the Italian San Donato Group, the medical team also successfully performed cardiovascular surgery on 8 children last week. The Cardiovascular Surgery Unit at La Rabta Hospital, led by Professor Mohamed Sami Mourali, won the 2nd Professor Ali Bousnina Prize for Excellence in Research in the field of cardiovascular diseases for the year 2023. The award followed an experimental TAH-LT2I study led by Professor Fathia Mghaieth of the Functional Investigations and Cardiological Resuscitation Unit at La Rabta Hospital. The Ali Bousnina Prize, created in 2006 by the Tunisian Society of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery (STCCCV) and the SAIPH Pharmaceutical Laboratories to encourage national research into the prevention and treatment of heart disease, was awarded at the National Congress of Cardiology and Vascular Surgery held in Djerba from June 21 to 24.
