People subject to legal proceedings can run for presidential election (Mnasri)

Any individual who meets the conditions set by the Electoral Law in force may stand as a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, announced Spokesman for the Independent High Authority for Elections (French: ISIE) Mohamed Tlili Mnasri.

Mnasri denied reports that people subject to legal proceedings cannot run as candidates, adding that the law in force does not prevent a detained person or a person subject to legal proceedings from taking part in the presidential election.

The conditions for candidacy set by Organic Law No. 2014-16 of May 26, 2014 on elections and referendums do not provide for the presentation of the criminal record certificate (Bulletin No.3), he told TAP. This means that anyone subject to legal proceedings or detained can stand as a candidate in the presidential election, he added.

However, Mnasri affirmed that two new conditions had been dictated by the new Constitution of 2022 according to which anyone wishing to stand as a candidate must be 40 years old on the day they submit the
ir candidacy, and must have parents or grandparents of Tunisian nationality.
