Nabil Ammar reaffirms Tunisia’s commitment to “political solution” in Libya

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar, on Monday, reiterated Tunisia’s position in favour of a political solution in Libya.

The Tunisian position was expressed by the head of Tunisian diplomacy in a speech delivered to the summit of the member countries of the African Union’s High-Level Committee on Libya, held in the Congolese capital, Brazzaville.

The Foreign Minister also reaffirmed Tunisia’s willingness to make every effort to reconcile the views and positions of the various Libyan parties in order to reach a peaceful settlement based on an inter-Libyan solution, free from any form of foreign interference.

Nabil Ammar pointed out that the ultimate objective of Tunisia’s policy towards Libya is first and foremost to “preserve the unity of Libya” and “ensure the security and stability of its brotherly people”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs added that President Kais Saied firmly supports this position of principle, which is perfectly illustrated by the fact that Tuni
sia hosted the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum under the auspices of the United Nations on November 9, 2020 and the official visit of the Head of State to Libya on March 17, 2021, the day after the Libyan authorities resulting from the Geneva process took office.

In this context, the Minister recalled the Head of State’s appeal to the Libyans to unite around a “comprehensive national project” capable of restoring Libya’s security and stability and promoting its key role in maintaining regional security.

This project must be pursued in cooperation with all parties and international bodies, in particular the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

Minister Nabil Ammar also affirmed that this summit undoubtedly represents “a privileged opportunity” to reconcile views and perceptions and to unite efforts in favour of a comprehensive national reconciliation. He, likewise, welcomed the efforts made by all parties to find a peaceful solution to the Libyan crisis.

In this context, he conveyed the thanks o
f President Kais Saïed, to his Congolese counterpart, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, chair of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, for promoting the Libyan national reconciliation process.
