In response to an oral question at the parliament’s upper house, Ait Taleb noted that his department has greatly benefited from the COVID-19 and Ebola experiences in terms of coping with viruses and diseases through vigilance, diagnosis and case monitoring.

The Minister said that a plan has been developed at the regional level to monitor potential cases, noting that the units under the Ministry at the level of border posts easily diagnose suspected cases of “monkeypox” and can alert the Ministry of Health to take appropriate measures at regional level.

These measures include confining infected people to their homes and treating them according to their symptoms, he said, noting that “there is no special treatment for monkeypox.”

The detection of monkeypox in Morocco is done by clinical and laboratory diagnosis, said the government official, noting that four laboratories have been reserved for this purpose, namely the national laboratory of prevention, the military laboratory in Rabat, the military laboratory in Marrakech and the Pasteur Institute in Casablanca.

Ait Taleb stressed that “the Ministry does not see the need to increase the number of these laboratories, because the disease is not widespread and the situation is controlled in border areas and in terms of training of professionals.”
