Ministry of Cultural Affairs: Severe sanctions will be imposed in event of negligence or failing” (Statement)


The Ministry of Cultural Affairs will not hesitate to impose the most severe sanctions against any person whose administrative investigation proves negligence or failure in the fulfilment of his mission and responsibilities,” Cultural Affairs Minister Hayet Guettat Guermazi said in a statement issued by the Ministry late on Saturday evening.

Following the collapse on December 16, 2023 of the southern outer wall of the medina of Kairouan, which left three people dead and three injured, the minister visited the site and chaired an emergency meeting of the local anti-disaster committee at the headquarters of the governorate of Kairouan, at the end of which the following measures were taken:

-Initiation of an administrative investigation into the supervision of the work by the company in charge and its monitoring by a team from the National Heritage Institute (INP), following the initiation of a judicial investigation into the company in charge of restoration and maintenance, which was awarded the public contr
act in accordance with the procedures in force and in compliance with the decree regulating public contracts.

-Installing barriers and closing off the roads leading to the rampart, while consolidating the remaining parts of the wall.

-Securing the perimeter of the accident by closing it and all the roads leading to “Beb el Jalladine” and closing the accesses to the rampart on the “Sidi Syouri” and “Beb El Khoukha” sides.

– Suspension of all cultural activities and events in the region.
