“By hosting this important conference, the Kingdom of Morocco proves once again its commitment to education and UNESCO,” said Azoulay who participated via videoconference in the opening of the 7th International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII), under the theme “Adult Learning and Education for Sustainable Development: A Transformative Agenda”.

This global conference, which is part of a long tradition that has seen the achievement of great collective advances, aims to “bring together the international community to advance the right to adult education,” said Azoulay, noting that adult education is an “essential lever to move forward together towards the goals of sustainable development and the green transition”.

While pointing out that more than 770 million adults and 126 million young people in the world cannot read or write a simple sentence, and that 2/3 of these people are women, Azoulay said that “the entire social fabric is threatened, as well as our ability to progress together”.

In this sense, the Director-General of UNESCO called for the extension and strengthening of efforts to ensure the generalization of adult education, highlighting the importance of citizenship education as part of adult learning and education.

Co-organized by the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco and UNESCO, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this global conference brings together stakeholders from around the world to shape the future of adult learning and education in the next decade.
