The Léraba provincial environmental directorate carried out a forest police operation throughout the province during the period from April 5 to 9, 2024. A large quantity of immature goïne liana products was seized on the border strip of Burkina Faso with the Ivory Coast and Mali, leaving for neighboring countries.

More than 500 bags of 100 kg of immature lianas, commonly called ”Zaban” in the Dioula language, ”liane goïne” in French and ”Weda” in Moré, bound for neighboring countries, were seized in Léraba during a forest police operation.

It is with the objective of putting an end to this practice which is gaining momentum in the province and allowing better valorization of the species with regard to current security and food issues in accordance with the legal provisions in force in Burkina Faso, that the Léraba provincial environmental directorate organized the forest police operation across the entire extent of Léraba.

The mission was made possible thanks to collaboration with the Cascades region
al water, forest and environment brigade as well as the VDP and the populations of the province.

While expressing his gratitude to these populations, the provincial director of the environment of Léraba, Harouna Sandwidi, invited them to remain vigilant and maintain this good collaboration with the environmental services.

A study carried out in 2016 by the general directorate of the economy indicated that the added value of the goïne liana in Burkina Faso was 154 million.

This added value could increase significantly if the illegal export of this product to neighboring countries stopped.

‘This is an opportunity for us to inform the population that any exploitation of wood or non-wood forest products must be declared to the forestry services for the purposes of advisory support, but also for data capitalization,’ said Harouna Sandwidi.
