The Tunis Court of Appeal sentenced journalist Khalifa Guesmi to five years in prison in a case related to the “disclosure of information” on the breaking up of a terrorist cell.

Guesmi, who was sentenced last November to one year in prison in first instance, had his sentence increased on appeal.

Radio Mosaique FM correspondent in Kairouan Khalifa Guesmi published an article on the breaking up of a terrorist cell and was accused of disclosing information in violation of the counter-terrorism law and the Penal Code.

Contacted by TAP, Khalifa Guesmi pointed out that it is not specified that the execution of the appeal decision must be immediate, adding that the defence committee will lodge an appeal in cassation within 10 days and request the suspension of the execution.

Guesmi further indicated that his phone has been seized since March 2022 and that he has been banned from travelling.
