Luanda: The Head of State Joo Louren§o said Friday that the death of nationalist Joo Garcia Bires represents a painful loss of a patriot who served the interests of the Angolan people in various fields, particularly in diplomacy. In a condolence note made public by the Presidency of the Republic, President Joo Louren§o expressed his dismay at the event, which occurred on Wednesday in Lisbon due to illness. ‘It is always painful to see those who have dedicated their lives to the cause of Angola’s independence, peace and developments pass away,’ wrote the President. He expressed his ‘deepest condolences to the bereaved family and all his friends and comrades’.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Joo Garcia Bires was born in Luanda on 27 February 1944 and was known for his dedication to scientific knowledge and patriotic ideals from an early age. In September 1960, he went into exile in Congo-Leopoldville, now the Democratic Republic of Congo, showing his commitment to the national liberation from colonial rule.
Garcia Bires’ revolutionary commitment is evident from his activities during the underground movement to the post-independence period, illustrating his exemplary militancy and loyalty to the MPLA. He played significant roles within the MPLA and national diplomacy, showing zeal and a high sense of state.
Between 10 September 1979 and 23 December 1980, Garcia Bires served as the interim Rector of Agostinho Neto University. As an ambassador to Namibia, Mozambique, and China, he was instrumental in defending Angola’s strategic interests and strengthening diplomatic ties, contributing to the nation’s development.
In the cultural sector, Garcia Bires made significant contributions as an intellectual and member of the Union of Angolan Writers, where he served as President. He enriched Angolan literature with several published poems and three notable literary works: Dia do Calend¡rio, O Silªncio Acordado, and Olhadelando.
