HM the King had sent a message of congratulations to Chaves, following his election as President of the Republic of Costa Rica. In this message, the Sovereign expressed to Chaves His warm congratulations and sincere wishes of full success in his high office for the achievement of more progress and prosperity to the friendly people of Costa Rica.
A former World Bank executive, Chaves, of the Social Democratic Progress Party, was elected president of this Central American country in the April 4 elections, for a four-year term, after winning 52.9% of the vote against 47.1% for his rival, former president Jose Maria Figueres.
