Gourma: Actors reflect on the nutritional situation in the Eastern region

The 2nd General Assembly (GA) of the Regional Nutrition Council for the year 2022, chaired by the Governor of the East Region, Colonel Hubert Yaméogo was held on Tuesday 23 May 2023 in Fada N’Gourma. The purpose of this meeting is to reflect on the nutritional situation in the Eastern region.

“Nutritional situation in the Eastern region: State of play and prospects” is the theme of reflection of the 2nd General Assembly (GA) of the regional nutrition council for the year 2022.

According to the governor of the Eastern region, the theme of this GA is justified in view of the results revealed by the report of the national nutritional survey (ENN) 2022 carried out urgently in regions with strong security challenges, including the region from the east.

He specified that the results of the final report of June 2022 of the communes of Fada N’Gourma, Gayéri and Kompienga which have brought together the most internally displaced persons (IDPs) since the beginning of the security crisis.

These results revealed prevalences of global acute malnutrition (GAM) of 15.2%, 12.1% and 9.6% respectively. This situation remains worrying, however, because these indicators remain high compared to the national average and WHO standards, said Colonel Hubert Yaméogo.

As a response to malnutrition, several recommendations have been made.

For the head of the service for the fight against disease and the protection of specific groups of the regional directorate in charge of health in the East, Dr Tougri Lendé, malnutrition has multisectoral factors that affect agriculture, livestock , water and sanitation.

Dr. Tougri the assembly noted that the GA was unanimous in the recommendations in the consideration of non-timber forest products for the benefit of vulnerable populations.

He recommended the transfer of food from the school canteen initially intended for areas with strong security challenges to accessible areas.

The actors have, for this purpose, drawn up a map of all the partners who intervene in the field of malnutrition in the Eastern region in order to harmonize practices and reach several beneficiaries.

They also appreciated the holding of this assembly which brought together the various sectors of the region involved in the fight against malnutrition.

The President of the Regional Chamber of Agriculture and also Regional Nutrition Champion, Philippe Yonli welcomed the holding of the GA to reflect on the issue of nutrition in the Eastern region.

“I find that this meeting is very important because it has made it possible to depict the nutritional situation of the region. A good diet helps the body to reduce cardiovascular diseases as much as possible. We encourage people to eat healthy,” he concluded.
