Ouagadougou: ECOWAS is celebrating its 49 years of existence this Tuesday. On the occasion, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, invited members to unite in order to win the fight against terrorism.
‘We remain convinced that it is through unity that we will succeed in preserving peace and strengthening our actions for the security of our Member States and our peoples. Through unity, we will preserve regional stability and the harmonious political and socio-economic development of our community,’ wrote Dr Omar Alieu Touray, in his message on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of ECOWAS.
This anniversary comes at a time when the organization is facing major challenges, particularly with the announced exits of three countries.
Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, criticizing ECOWAS for its inaction in the face of the security situation they are going through, formed the Alliance of Sahel States in September 2023.
‘It is our duty to remain united if we aspire to victory in the fight agains
t insecurity. But it is our very unity that is threatened today. We must do everything we can to preserve our unity,’ insists Dr Omar Alieu Touray.
Quoting General Yakubu Gowon, one of the founding fathers of ECOWAS, Dr Touray said: ‘Neither the generation of our fathers nor the past, present or future generations will be able to understand or forgive the breakup of the community
