Discussions underway to create free zone between Tozeur and Algeria’s El Oued (governor)

Discussions are underway to create a free trade zone between the Tozeur and El Oued (Algeria) governorates at the Hazoua border post, Governor of Tozeur Mohamed Aymen Bejaoui told TAP on Monday.

Given its border location and the existence of two land border crossings with Algeria, namely the Hazoua border crossing and the Faj Bouzaiene border crossing in the Tamaghza delegation, Tozeur Governorate is involved in various cooperation programmes, he added.

He mentioned the possibility of creating joint industrial zones in the delegations of Hazoua and Tamaghza, where investors from both countries will be encouraged to set up and benefit from various exemptions.

The governor praised the progress made in economic relations with Algeria in recent years, reflected in the development of transit and road traffic between the two countries.

“At the Hazoua border crossing, the number of passengers exceeded 2.7 million in both directions in 2023,” Bejaoui announced.

The consolidation of bilateral relations is also re
flected in the recent launch of preliminary studies for the economic corridors project.

According to the governor, this will involve the construction of a four-lane road linking the port of Gabes to the Algerian border, adjacent to the Tozeur governorate.
