Ouagadougou: ECOWAS announced on Monday the sending of an exploratory mission to Togo, at a time when the government’s desire to move from presidential to parliamentary regimes faces strong opposition.
The exploratory mission, which will take place from April 15 to 20, 2024 in Togo, is made up of seven members and is led by Maman Sambo Sidikou, informs ECOWAS in a press release sent Monday evening to the AIB.
Its task will be to discuss with all stakeholders before the legislative and regional elections of April 29, 2024.
Maman Sambo Sidikou’s team will also focus on the latest developments in the crisis hitting Togo, following the transition, on March 25, from the presidential regime to the parliamentary regime.
Under this change, the President of the Republic will now be elected by the deputies. In turn, the President of the Republic will appoint the President of the Council of Ministers who will, in principle, exercise power.
But faced with the outcry, President Faure Gnassingbé, in power since 2005,
asked Parliament to reread the constitutional reform project.
