The minister, who was speaking at the House of Advisors, pointed to the increase in cases which reached on Tuesday 1,677, noting the absence of serious cases and deaths, while the occupancy rate of intensive care units stands at 0.36%.

It is the “Omicron BA.2” sub-variant that is currently dominant in Morocco, said Mr. Ait Taleb, adding that despite the current level of transmission.

The minister attributed the rise in positive cases recorded over the past days in Morocco to the lifting of preventive measures and the relaxation observed among citizens, in particular the non-wearing of masks, as well as to trips and gatherings which are increasing in recent days on the eve of the summer season.

The official ruled out the tightening of restrictions “given that the whole world has lifted them and is now trying to live with the virus”.

The Kingdom has developed immunity thanks, first, to the national vaccination campaign, then following the cases recorded, noted Mr. Ait Taleb, adding that “the virus is therefore proving more harmful to the economy than to health”.

The minister called on vulnerable people who received the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine more than six months ago to get the booster shot, insisting on the obligation to be vaccinated for people who did not do it yet.
