Call for Canadian companies to increase investments in Tunisia to benefit from inter-African trade corridors

Head of the Cabinet of the Minister of Trade and Export Development, Lamia Abroug, Monday, called on Canadian companies to increase investments in Tunisia within the framework of the Free Trade Zone African Continental Exchange (AfCFTA).

Chairing an information day on Tunisian-Canadian trade, organized Monday in Tunis by the Tunisian-Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the official recalled that Tunisia represents an important platform for trade between Africa and the rest of the world.

Thus, investing in Tunisia means integrating a market of 500 million inhabitants (COMESA) and targeting a market of 2 billion consumers by 2050 (ZLECAf), she underscored.

Abroug indicated that Canadian investments in Tunisia play an important role in strengthening economic relations between the two countries, adding that Canadian investments cover several sectors including energy, ICT, financial services, agri-food, pharmaceutical industry… and contribute to the transfer of expertise and know-how and the creation of
jobs.

According to the Ministry of Trade and Export Development, trade between the two countries reached 650 million dinars in 2022, including 341.9 MD of Tunisian exports to Canada and 309.36 MD of imports from this country.

Olive oil, dates, fish, electronic equipment and textiles constitute the main Tunisian products exported to Canada, while imports from this country are mainly wheat (85% of imports), industrial appliances and equipment, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
