“My country supports the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco and which the Security Council has described as serious and credible to advance the process towards a settlement” of the regional dispute over the Sahara, underlined the representative of the United Arab Emirates during of the annual meeting of the Committee of 24 (C24) of the United Nations.
This initiative represents an “important solution” which is in line with the Charter and the resolutions of the United Nations and which preserves the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, she noted.
The United Arab Emirates also expressed its continued support for the political process launched since 2007 under the exclusive aegis of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy which aims at achieving a realistic, pragmatic and compromise political solution.
In this regard, the Emirati diplomat welcomed the first tour of the Personal Envoy of the UN SG for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura in the region, while welcoming his continuous efforts to relaunch the process of round tables.
She also highlighted Morocco’s sustained efforts to improve the living conditions of the populations of the southern provinces.
The diplomat underlined that her country, in line with the vision of its wise leadership and in concretization of its historical and strategic relations with Morocco, has inaugurated its consulate general in the city of Laayoune.
She also praised the “essential” role of MINURSO, stressing the need to respect the ceasefire.
