Burkina Faso: A new outbreak of avian flu discovered and extinguished in Ouagadougou


Ouagadougou: The Minister of Agriculture, animal and fishery resources, Commander Ismaël Sombié announced Wednesday in a press release the appearance of a new outbreak of avian flu which was immediately extinguished in Ouagadougou.

In a press release, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël Sombié informed through a press release dated March 6, 2024, of the appearance of new cases of avian flu on March 1. in Ouagadougou.

However, the note specifies that as of January 23, 2023, all outbreaks were completely extinguished and infection declarations were lifted in the regions.

While Burkina Faso has begun the process of self-declaring a country free, we read in the press release, a new outbreak appeared on March 1, 2024 in sector 23 of district 5 of the commune of Ouagadougou, province of Kadiogo, central region.

The reaction of veterinarians made it possible to implement adequate response measures which led to the outbreak being extinguished.

The Minister, however, call
s on breeders to exercise maximum vigilance, given the seriousness of the disease.

He also reassures that appropriate measures have been taken to monitor the said outbreak with a view to stemming any resurgence of the disease and preventing the appearance of possible new outbreaks.

Also, he invites stakeholders in the poultry sector and all populations to report as soon as possible any observation of mass mortality of domestic and wild birds to the competent services.

As a reminder, an outbreak of avian flu caused the mortality of 681,450 poultry in 12 regions of the country in 2022.
