These include the Agreement on the Establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA); the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption; the Bamako Convention on the Ban of the Import into Africa and the Control of Transboundary Movement and Management of Hazardous Wastes within Africa; the Protocol to the Constitutive Act of the African Union relating to the Pan-African Parliament; the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, also known as the “Pelindaba Treaty”; the African Charter on Road Safety and the Headquarters Agreement on the Establishment of the African Migration Observatory.
The ceremony of deposit of the instruments of ratification of these treaties was held by the AU Office of the Legal Counsel (OLC) with the participation of the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, representing the African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Morocco to the African Union and UNECA, Mohamed Arrouchi.
The ratification by the Kingdom of the Protocol to the Constitutive Act of the African Union relating to the Pan-African Parliament, adopted in Malfabo on June 27, 2014, expresses its firm commitment to modernizing and improving parliamentary action on our African continent, turning it into a pillar of African integration and a means of consolidating the values of democracy and human rights, Arrouch said on this occasion.
Regarding governance, the Moroccan diplomat noted that the Kingdom has also ratified the AU Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption, which provides a legal and regulatory framework in line with the African context.
According to the diplomat, the ratification by Morocco of the Agreement establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area means the effective accession of the Kingdom to this single trade market and the involvement of Morocco in this process.
As for the headquarters agreement on the establishment of the African Migration Observatory, Arrouchi highlighted the importance of the Observatory which was born out of the Vision of HM King Mohammed VI, AU Leader on the issue of Migration.
The diplomat also noted that the ratification of the African Charter on Road Safety is part of Morocco’s previous continental commitments.
As for sustainable development, the Moroccan diplomat argued that the ratification by the Kingdom of the Bamako Convention reflects the determination and commitment of the Kingdom to achieve the objectives of this convention.
The ambassador also referred to the ratification of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which, he said, is a valuable addition to the international and continental nuclear arms control system, while promoting the peaceful use of energy to achieve environmental and socio-economic development in Africa.
Early April, Morocco ratified the treaty establishing the African Medicines Agency (AMA) under the African Union.
