AMSSNuR Participates in 7th Meeting of Contracting Parties to Convention on Safety of Radioactive Waste Management

In accordance with the provisions of Article 31 of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, the AMSSNuR participates in this meeting to present the national report on the safety of radioactive waste management and to provide clarifications to the various questions posed by the contracting countries, said the Agency in a statement.

The Kingdom was represented at this event by a delegation led by the acting director of AMSSNuR, Mounji Zniber, and composed of representatives of the Permanent Mission in Vienna, AMSSNuR and the National Center for Energy, Science and Nuclear Techniques (CNESTEN).

Regarding the national report on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, Zniber made a presentation on June 28, 2022 in the context of the review of national reports of Group 7 composed of Germany, Brazil, Cuba, Eritrea, Mauritania, the Netherlands, Serbia, Syria, Ukraine, Uruguay and Morocco.

The presentation covered several elements including the national radioactive waste and spent fuel management program, the national inventory of radioactive waste and disused radioactive sealed sources, changes since the 2018 Sixth Review Meeting, and significant events since October 2020, when the national report was submitted to the IAEA in its capacity as Secretariat to the Joint Convention, the performance and good practices undertaken by Morocco since the Sixth Review Meeting of 2018 and the measures adopted by AMSSNuR and CNESTEN to deal with the health crisis of Covid-19.

At the end of the presentation, the Group 7 experts appreciated the regulatory approach and practices undertaken by Morocco to ensure the long-term safety of radioactive waste and spent fuel management, the statement concluded.
