Ambassador to Sweden Holds Several Talks in Jämtland Härjedalen Region

The strengthening of economic cooperation was the focus of discussions held by Moroccan Ambassador to Sweden Karim Medrek with officials of the Swedish region of Jämtland Härjedalen, as part of a two-day visit to this region (central west), organized by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This visit to prospecting economic (June 16-17), which included the city of Östersund, capital of the region and Äre, as well as a tour in a series of industrial sites and innovation spaces, represented a good opportunity to stop on the opportunities offered by this region and to make known the development projects in the Kingdom.

During this visit, Medrek met with Marita Ljung, Governor of the region, Peter Jansson, Chairman of the City Council of Äre, Effie Kourlos, Mayor of the City of Östersund, as well as with the heads of the largest industrial groups in the region, eager to build ties with the Kingdom.

Recalling the privileged geographical position of Morocco and its political stability, Medrek told his interlocutors of the many incentives for investment and trade, making the Kingdom a regional and continental hub.

The economic openness has been achieved, moreover, through the many free trade agreements concluded by Morocco, linking it, thus, to more than 50 countries and offering access to a market of more than one billion consumers,” he said.

In this regard, while stressing that Morocco has achieved some progress reflected in sustained economic growth, a significant increase in national wealth and the average standard of living of the population and finally a proven development of public infrastructure, the Moroccan diplomat highlighted the competitive ecosystems, placing Morocco in the world maps of production, trade and investment.

Stressing the importance of the innovation and research sectors in Sweden, Medrek explained that this mission comes at a time when Morocco is experiencing a strong development of its economy and where the market is highly receptive.

According to him, the B2B meetings were promising and have identified some opportunities for cooperation, in this case in the areas of energy and renewable energy, building materials, ecotourism and academic research.

Jämtland Härjedalen, with an area equal to that of the Netherlands, is a mecca for ecotourism and several high-tech companies, and has a unique identity as part of the Sápmi, the land of the indigenous Swedish “Sami” people.
