A teacher-researcher from Thomas Sankara University has proposed the creation of a local currency similar to the Special Drawing Rights (SDR) of the International Monetary Fund.

In an analysis devoted to the Bank of Treasury Deposits and Public Accounting of Burkina Faso (BDT), relayed on the information portal Lefaso.net, the teacher researcher, Sylvestre Ouédraogo wants the BDT to move towards a local currency usable within public institutions and then with individuals.

‘I think that the BDT must move towards the creation of local currency. It can start with a settlement and compensation system between public institutions using a specific monetary unit which will be a paper currency (FCFA, dollar, euros, etc.). This currency, which will resemble the SDR (IMF special drawing rights), if it shows signs of solidity, could evolve towards exchanges with individuals,’ proposed professor-researcher at Thomas Sankara University.

According to him, this is possible if the authorities work to ensure that this currency is actually used for trade on every occasion.

‘The Burkinabes need to know that in the West, they (people) use several currencies simultaneously and that this does not pose a
ny problems. It is the solidity of a currency and its ability to facilitate exchanges with other partners that will ensure its credibility,’ he said. AaAaaaa

The Treasury Deposit Bank is open to public institutions, state companies and public establishments of the State, projects and programs and local authorities.

The CFA Franc, the official currency used in Burkina, is increasingly contested and presented as a currency of French colonial domination.

Burkina Faso is engaged in a fight against terrorism and all other forms of aggression, exploitation or domination.
