Tunisia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Syria Mohamed Mhadhebi, Sunday, handed a copy of his credentials to Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Mekdad, reads a press release of Syria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry. President Kais Saied, last April, decided to appoint an ambassador to Syria, 11 years after diplomatic relations were severed. Saied, who had a meeting with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad, in the margins of their participation in the Arab League Summit in Jeddah Friday, described the meeting as “historic”, adding that it reflects the strong fraternal relations between the two countries. He said “those who claimed to be friends with Syria only made Syrians suffer more for several years.” Saied welcomed Syria’s return to the Arab League, stressing the need for this country to recover and preserve its unity and stability and for its people to decide their own fate, away of any foreign intervention. He also expressed wish to see Syria recover its position as a hub of knowledge and culture and fulfill its role at the regional and international levels. The meeting provided an opportunity to review the strong and historic ties between the two countries and to underline the need to expand them into promising areas based on innovative visions. The two Presidents also agreed to intensify opportunities for meetings, consultations and coordination at various levels. President Kais Saied and his Syrian counterpart also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest and discussed items on the agenda of the Arab Summit. For his part, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stressed in a statement to reporters after his meeting with President Kais Saied “Tunisia has not changed”, despite the conditions it has experienced over the past ten years, during which Tunisians have shown their true affinity with Syrians. “Tunisia was once used as a rear base for conspiracies, not only against Syria, but against Arab thought and belonging. A platform for the spread of obscurantist thought in the different Arab countries,” he pointed out.
