South Africa: 30 Year Imprisonment for a 21-Year-Old Rapist

Yesterday 17 October 2016, the KwaDukuza Regional Court convicted and sentenced Mxolisi Sabelo Ngcobo (21) to 30 years imprisonment for rape.

On 24 March 2015, at about 11:30, the 18-year-old victim was walking along R74 road, KwaDukuza, when she was approached by the accused. The accused pretended to offer his help by carrying her bags. He pointed her with a knife, raped her and also took her belongings. A case of rape was opened and the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation. The accused was then arrested and charged accordingly. He made several court appearances before he was being sentenced.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa commended the officers for their effort that resulted in the swift arrest. “We appeal to the community not to accept help from strangers but to rather contact their families or close friends to come and help them in order for them to be safe,” she said.
