Sissili: 12,285 children aged 5 months will be vaccinated against malaria


Ouagadougou: 12,285 children aged 5 months will receive their 1st dose of malaria vaccine from June 28 to July 1, 2024, in the Léo health district, Center-West region .

The support of authorities and opinion leaders is requested for the success of the national vaccination campaign against malaria which will take place from June 28 to July 1, 2024, in the Léo health district.

The head of the expanded vaccination program for the Léo health district, Kassoum Babouan, noted that despite the multiple efforts made in prevention and treatment, malaria remains a public health problem.

‘It ranks first among the reasons for consultation and hospitalization in health facilities,’ he underlined.

For Mr. Babouan, the introduction of a vaccine aims to prevent disease.

And to the chief physician of the Léo health district, Dr Aboubacary Abdou, to maintain that it is in this spirit that the Léo health district initiated on Monday June 23, 2024 in Léo, an advocacy workshop with the authorities and opinion leaders , in fa
vor of the current national vaccination campaign against malaria.

According to the head doctor of the Léo health district (MCD), Dr Aboubacary Abdou, this first phase of vaccination against RTS,S malaria will concern children aged 5 months.

Mr. Aboubacar explained that to be protected each child must receive 4 doses of RTS,S vaccine because he says that the malaria vaccine is safe and reduces cases of severe malaria.

‘The minimum time interval between doses is four weeks,’ he said.

To hear him say, effective communication for mothers to respect the vaccination schedule is a necessity.

The MCD of Léo requested the commitment and support of the authorities and opinion leaders of the province of Sissili for the achievement of the expected objectives.

Participants were also entitled to two communications.

The first focused on the introduction of the anti-malaria vaccine and was presented by the head of the expanded vaccination program for the Léo health district, Kassoum Babouan.

The second communication
on chemo prevention of seasonal malaria (CPS) was made by the MCD of Léo, Dr Aboubacary Abdou.

In the opinion of the MCD, children under 5 years of age are the most affected by malaria and the majority of deaths due to malaria are in this age group.

According to him, the integration of chemo prevention of seasonal malaria could contribute to the reduction of cases and deaths by 75%.

The High Commissioner of Sissili, Tewindé Isaac Sia welcomed the full participation of participants in the discussions.

Mr. Sia also requested the involvement of all stakeholders, especially parents, for the success of the national vaccination campaign against malaria.
