PRETORIA TO INTENSIFY EFFORTS TO HELP WOMEN, YOUTH BE INVOLVED IN TOURISM SECTOR

CAPE TOWN, The Tourism Department will intensify efforts to help women and young people from South African townships to get involved in business opportunities in the sector as the government pushes for an inclusive economy, says Deputy Minister Tokozile Xasa.

She said this when she addressed an imbizo (gatering) in the Khayelitsha informal township in Cape Town on Wednesday to provide a platform for communities to interact with local leaders and members of the Western Cape Tourism officials to promote active participation in tourism initiatives.

“For us to realise radical economic transformation, we must have inclusive growth and this inclusive economic growth does not mean you will be counted as statistics, it means you must participate,” she said.

She added that there are several programmes which the department runs which are aimed at empowering young people in the hospitality sector, such as the Social Responsibility Implementation Programme.

The programme is aimed at supporting the development of community based tourism, thereby stimulating job creation, sector transformation, economic empowerment, community benefit and geographic spread of tourism investment.

Xasa said programmes like these woud work only if there was integration within the tourism sector where the private sector partnered the government to stimulate township economic activity.
