COCAINE WORTH 7.4 MLN RAND SEIZED AT JOHANNESBURG’S OR TAMBO AIRPORT

JOHANNESBURG, Customs officers of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) have intercepted 26 kilogrammes of cocaine worth an estimated 7.4 million Rand (about 571,000 US dollars) at OR Tambo International Airport here.

The bust took place last Friday when the Customs officials and detector dogs intercepted the cocaine consignment, declared as cosmetics, from Sao Paolo, Brazil, in transit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The shipment of narcotics was discovered when the officers identified the “cosmetic products” for inspection and the detector dog gave a positive indication. Upon examination, the bottles of cosmetic products were found to contain a white cream, which dried up quicker than normal cream and became powdery when dry.

A narcotics test on randomly selected bottles confirmed the contents to be cocaine.

The SARS have handed over the seized cocaine to the South African Police Services (SAPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (the Hawks) for further investigation and safe-keeping.
