Ouagadougou: The Baskuy health district launched a community sanitation operation called “Nimby” on Wednesday on Mogho Naaba Sanem Street, aiming to raise awareness among the local population about sanitation in the living environment. This initiative comes as the rainy season approaches, with the goal of preventing diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the operation is part of the national days of patriotic commitment, where Baskuy health district staff, traders, VN-ASBC, and the local population gathered for a community sanitation day to prevent diseases as the rainy season draws near. Equipped with shovels, trowels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and motorcycle taxis, participants engaged in cleaning activities on May 21, 2025.
This initiative, named “Nimby 1” (Not In My Back Yard), encourages the local population to maintain cleanliness in their living and working environments to avoid disease outbreaks. Community Health Agents (ASBC) are leading the charge, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance in health management.
Dr. Natogma Ursule BAMBARA, Chief Medical Officer of the Baskuy Health District, expressed the importance of this sanitation operation. “We are on the eve of the winter season, a time conducive to diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Our primary mission is prevention, which is why we came out today to clean up Moro Naaba Sanem Street,” she noted. Dr. BAMBARA hopes this activity will continue to benefit the population, urging the community to engage in sanitation activities.
Local residents, including Zo©nabo Ou©draogo and Issouf Tond©, praised the initiative. Ou©draogo emphasized the importance of joining health personnel in their efforts, while Tond© highlighted the benefits of a clean neighborhood in reducing mosquito populations and disease risk.
This first edition of the Baskuy health district’s Days of Excellence, taking place in the 1st district of Ouagadougou, will run from May 21 to 24, 2025.
