“Violations of freedoms have reached an unprecedented level in Algeria,” said the gathering of parties, associations, activists and actors of the Hirak in a statement.

According to the Front, “not a single region is spared. Prosecutions, remands in custody and prison sentences are legion. “Prisons are packed with citizens who have been detained just for expressing an opinion or taking a critical political stand,” it said.

The logic of repression of the authorities wants “to silence a whole people, forcing them to submission to the public authority,” the Front warned.

“Prisons and courts are not the only places that reflect oppression,” it added, stating that it is also found “in workplaces.

The Front recalled in that regard that “three teachers were arbitrarily dismissed from their jobs” at the University of Bejaia. Some Trade union officials “are suspended” and others “are prosecuted.”

“This climate of terror also affects the field of culture as shown by the the recent bans on the book fair of Sidi-Aïch, and on lectures by scientists and writers at the University of Bejaia and in cultural institutions.”

The Algerian people “must not continue to suffer passively this serious attack on human dignity,” according to the authors of the statement.

It is each and everyone’s “duty” to “get involved in the reclaiming of our rights and freedoms, our spaces of expression and our dignity violated by so many injustices that we continue to endure.”

“The existence and activity of parties, associations and cultural groups are increasingly challenged” due to “the strong pressure” that is exerted on them “to destroy any form of resistance in society,” the Front warned.

Launched in 2021 by the Forces of the Pact for the Democratic Alternative (PAD), the Front advocates the “fight against repression in all its forms”, “the repeal of laws including Article 87 bis,” “the release of political and opinion prisoners” and “the effective establishment of all freedoms.”

According to the National Committee for the Liberation of Detainees, 260 people, accused of undermining state security, undermining the integrity of the territory and subversive acts, are currently detained in Algerian prisons in deplorable conditions. Most are prosecuted for simply expressing an opinion, particularly through publications on social networks.
